La Paz is a department of El Salvador in the south central area of the country. The capital is Zacatecoluca. It has an area of 1,224 km² and a population of more than 300,000.
The department was created February, 1852.
There are various caves containing rock writing.
The department has a church in Zacatecoluca where the Independence Hero Dr Jose Simeon Cañas y Villacorta was born. He was known as "The Liberator of the Slaves in Central America".
Zacatecoluca is the capital of the La Paz Department, located in the Lempa River valley. Zacatecoluca has a population of over 62,576 (2006 est.).
The city is a commercial and manufacturing center, and it serves the surrounding agricultural area. Major products include textiles, baskets, and wood items
The city is home to the Catedral Santa Lucía, a monument to José Simeon Cañas, a priest who in 1824 successfully abolished slavery in Central America.
